Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD- The IronBirds rallied to walk-off against the Staten Island Yankees in ten innings, taking the series opener 2-1. Sam Kimmel scored the winning run on a Stefan Lopez wild pitch to push Aberdeen's win streak to five games.
After the Yankees tied the game in the ninth inning, Aberdeen put together three clutch at-bats to load the bases, setting up the walk-off wild pitch. They scored both of their runs off wild pitches.
Kimmel got on base with a one-out single. Tanner Murphy pinch hit for Austin Wynns and laced the first pitch he saw into center field for a single. Jared Breen battled at the plate, fouling off multiple two strike pitches before drawing a walk to load the bases. Finally Kris Richards fought back from 0-2 to even the count at 2-2 before Lopez bounced an offspeed pitch to the backstop, scoring Kimmel from third.
Jose Figuereo was unable to close it out in the ninth for Aberdeen despite showcasing some dominant offspeed pitches in his two innings of work. With the Yankees down to their last strike, Brandon Thomas hit a sharp ground ball into right field scoring Daniel Lopez easily from second. Catcher Trent Garrison got the rally started for Staten Island with a leadoff single. Lopez came on to pinch run and stole second base immediately. Figuereo was able to get the next two hitters out via strike out and a pop out to the short stop but couldn't get the last strike on Thomas.
The IronBirds pitching was outstanding for the entire game, allowing just one hit through eight innings before allowing the tying run in the ninth. The staff combined to allow one run on four hits and no walks in 10 innings of work. Janser Severino pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in a spot start for the IronBirds. His only trouble came in the first inning when he hit three consecutive Yankee batters. Severino was assisted by his defense when Wynns gunned down Mike O'Neill at third on a double steal attempt. He finished his outing giving up just one hit.
Jorge Rivera pitched 3.1 perfect innings in relief, striking out four Yankee hitters. After Figuereo pitched the eighth and ninth innings, Harry Marino came in to pitch the tenth, allowing no hits and picking up a strikeout. He picked up his first win of the season.
The IronBirds picked up their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth without the benefit of a base hit. Kris Richards worked a one-out walk. He came all the way around to score after stealing second base uncontested, advancing to third on Trey Mancini's ground out and coming home on a wild pitch by Yankees' pitcher Phillip Walby.
Game two of this three-game set will be Saturday at 7:05. Mitch Horacek is scheduled to make his debut for the IronBirds. Jairo Heredia will start for Staten Island.
