Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - Ty Buttrey threw six-shutout innings and Kendrick Perkins and Kevin Mager each had two RBI games as the Lowell Spinners cruised past the Vermont Lake Monsters by a final of 4-1 Friday night at LeLacheur Park.
As they did in three of the first four home games of the season, the Spinners jumped out to a first inning lead. Tzu-Wei Lin extended his hitting streak to five games with a leadoff double, advancing to third on a flyout by Manuel Margot. Lin came in to score when Kevin Mager's routine ground ball to shortstop was two-hopped to first allowing Mager to reach and the Spinners to take a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (5-5) extended the lead in the third inning after Margot reached on a single through the hole. Vermont had him picked off, but the throw got away and Margot safely advanced to second. Mager followed with a single up the middle, stopped by the shortstop in shallow center, but Margot raced home on the play, putting the Spinners ahead, 2-0.
The Spinners tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning and it was once again the combination of Mager and Kendrick Perkins in the middle of the lineup to do the damage. Mager led off the inning with a double and came in to score when Perkins followed with his first home run of the season.
Vermont (4-7) had little success against Spinners' pitching Friday night as Ty Buttrey was spectacular in his second start, hurling six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two. He threw 46 of his 71 pitches for strikes before giving way to Taylor Grover. In his second outing, Grover who was particularly efficient, throwing just 17 pitches (15 strikes) in two shutout innings, striking out one while allowing one hit. Greg Larson picked up the save, his third, allowing an unearned run in the ninth.
Perkins and Mager each had two RBI nights for the Spinners, while Margot, Lin, Williams Jerez and Cleuluis Rondon each added hits.
The Spinners go for back-to-back wins Saturday evening when Sergio Gomez gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch. It's Pirates Night at LeLacheur Park, with a special appearance from the Pirates of the Caribbean, and another post-game fireworks show. Tickets for the game remain available at www.LowellSpinners.com.
