Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- Kevin Mager was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, Kendrick Perkins hit a two-run homer and Ty Buttrey allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings as the Lowell Spinners opened a three-game series against the Lake Monsters with a 4-1 victory over Vermont in New York-Penn League action Friday night at LeLecheur Park.

The Spinners jumped out on top in the bottom of the first as Tsu-Wei Lin led off with a double, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a Mager grounder to shortstop that was thrown away by Chad Pinder to first base for a two-base error. Lowell added another run in the third on a Mager RBI infield single off Pinder's glove that scored Manuel Margot all the way from second base.

Vermont starter Gregory Paulino allowed just the two runs on five hits over the first five innings, but Mager led off the sixth with a double and scored on a two-run homer to leftfield by Perkins for a 4-0 Spinners advantage. Paulino (0-2) finished with four runs (three earned) allowed with two walks and five strikeouts over six innings.

The Lake Monsters struggled offensively as Buttrey allowed just four baserunners over the first six innings. Vermont's best chance to score came in the first with runners on first and second with one out after a single and walk, but Michael Soto lined into a double play to shortstop with B.J. Boyd being doubled off second base. Chad Pinder singled with one out in the fourth, but Buttrey got Soto to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Vermont, which scored in the first inning on Thursday in a 1-0 win at Connecticut, finally scored again in the ninth inning on Friday to keep Lowell from recording their fourth shutout of the young season. Boyd doubled to left with one out, moved over to third on a fielding error by third baseman Mager and scored on a fielder's choice groundout by Soto to snap the 16-inning scoreless streak.

Boyd had two of Vermont's four hits, the second straight day that the Lake Monsters finished with four hits in a game. Taylor Massey and Fernand Cruzado both tossed a scoreless inning in relief for Vermont (4-7), which has lost two of the first three games on its current five-game roadtrip

The Lake Monsters and Spinners will play the second of the three-game series at Lowell on Saturday followed by a 1:05 pm finale on Sunday. Vermont returns to Centennial Field for a three-game homestand against the Tri-City ValleyCats on July 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
