Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Last season, all Brooklyn needed to do in the first round of the playoffs was win one game at Dutchess Stadium in order to advance to the championship round. The Cyclones had all offseason to think about the Renegades winning the final two games of that series en route to their second New York-Penn League Championship. But so far in 2013, the Cyclones have taken two out of three at The Dutch following Friday night's 7-4 victory, and now three of the first four in the season series.

Renegades lefty starter Chris Kirsch entered the game with a 1-0 record and one of the lowest earned run averages in the league at 0.82 through his first two starts. Coming off five decent innings in Brooklyn in Sunday, he was saddled with a no decision after Hudson Valley could not protect a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning. Right away, Brooklyn put together a monstrous first inning when all nine Cyclones came to bat. A sac fly from L.J. Mazzilli and RBI singles from Matt Oberste and Alex Sanchez made it 3-0 faster than the 4,756 in attendance could say Rascal.

But the boys in blue tied it in the bottom of the first after a Julian Ridings leadoff double and a Ty Young infield single with one out. Johnny Field's ground rule double over the wall in left center trimmed the deficit to 3-1. Ariel Soriano's RBI groundout made it 3-2 and gave him 10 for the season, extending his team lead. And with Omar Narvaez at third and two outs, James Harris dropped down a perfect bunt to tie the score.

Narvaez would lead off the fourth with a single with the score still tied at three before moving to second on a wild pitch from Cyclones starter Seth Lugo. A Harris strikeout and a John Alexander groundout led Narvaez to third, where he'd come in to score on a two out double by Darryl George. Hudson Valley finally had its first lead at 4-3.

Three singles and a 'Gades error in the top of the fifth tied the score and loaded the bases with nobody out against reliever Kevin Brandt. Brandt would lock in to retire the final three hitters in order before Brooklyn took over for good in a three-run sixth inning. With two outs and runners at first and second, James Roche came through against the 'Gades again with the game-winning RBI single to make it 5-4. The next batter Colton Playa, who tied the score in the fifth with an RBI single, provided a pair of insurance runs with a two-run double to make it 7-4. That score held up, as the Renegades would only manage two base hits over the final four innings.
