Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

The IronBirds defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades in the opening game of a three-game series, 5-1 on Wednesday night. Aberdeen's pitching staff struck out 15 hitters to pave the way for the victory.

Ain't No Valley Low Enough

The IronBirds scored their first runs in the third inning when Ricardo Andujar reached first on an infield single. He then scored on a Cedric Mullins RBI triple. Mullins launched a deep ball to right-center field that rolled to the wall and allowed him to hustle all the way to third. With Mullins at third base, D.J. Stewart extended the lead to two by hitting a sacrifice fly that pushed Mullins across the plate.

Can't Stop, Won't Stop

In the fourth inning, the IronBirds kept things going with handy hits, and a little help from the Renegades. Mike Odenwaelder reached first base on a line drive to centerfield. The next batter, Jerry McClanahan reached a full count. Odenwaelder took off to steal second base on the 3-2 pitch, which was called a ball, but some confusion between the Renegades catcher and second basemen led to a poor throw that allowed Odenwaelder to reach third on a throwing error. Ricardo Andujar was next to the plate, hitting a blooper to shallow center to score Odenwaelder from third base, extending the IronBirds lead to 3-0.

Retaliation

Hudson Valley scored their only run when catcher Taylor Hawkins was able to hit an RBI single to score Joe McCarthy making the score 3-1.

Too Hot To Handle

IronBirds Mike Odenwaelder put a ball into centerfield for a double to lead off in sixth inning and made it to third base after an Andujar groundout. Cedric Mullins hit a dart to the Renegades first basemen Alex Schmidt, who was unable to handle it, dropping the liner and giving the IronBirds another run.

The Easy Way

Jerry McClanahan came to the plate in the seventh inning with two-outs and the bases loaded. He was able to score the IronBirds final run of the game, making the score 5-1, when he reached a full count before recording an RBI-walk to score D.J. Stewart the easy way.
