Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - In a back-and-forth game the Lowell Spinners emerged victorious Wednesday night, leaving the bases full of Connecticut Tigers in the ninth inning for a 7-4 win on Dogman Bobble Head Giveaway and Mustache Appreciation Night at LeLacheur Park.
Connecticut (11-13) took the lead in the third inning when Steven Fuentes led off the third inning, reaching on a throwing error by Hector Lorenzana. He would come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Josh Lester to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (15-10) took the lead in the fourth inning after Andrew Benintendi led off with a walk. Singles from Tate Matheny and Victor Acosta loaded the bases. After Josh Ockimey popped out, Mitch Gunsolus ripped a single to right field, plating Matheny and Benintendi, giving the Spinners a 2-1 lead as the Tigers cut him down trying to stretch the play to a double.
The lead was short lived however, as the Tigers took advantage of a streak of wildness from Jose Almonte. After a lead-off walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases, Matt Kent came out of the bullpen. An RBI groundout and RBI singles from Will Allen and A.J. Simcox gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
Lowell answered immediately with three runs in the fifth. Basabe grabbed a share of the New York-Penn League lead in home runs with a solo blast down the right-field line. With two-on and two-outs, Victor Acosta grounded to third but Lester's throw was in the dirt, scoring a pair and giving the Spinners a 5-4 lead.
The Spinners added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings before the Tigers made things interesting, loading the bases with no outs. Bobby Poyner, who came on with two on and no outs, struck out two and induced a pop to shallow left to leave the bases stranded with Tigers and send the Spinners on the road with a 7-4 win.
Four Spinners had multi-hit games, led by Basabe, who collected two RBI and a stolen base. De La Guerra, Matheny and Acosta also added two-hit games, while Gunsolus was 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI.
Almonte went four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks. He struck out two. Kent (2-0), allowed all three runners inherited runners to score but otherwise did not allow a run on four hits over three scoreless. He struck out two. Taylor Nunez went an inning plus, allowing a pair of hits, before Poyner picked up his third save with two strikeouts in the ninth.
Lowell heads to Connecticut Thursday night where Dioscar Romero (1-2, 4.11) gets the ball for a 7pm first pitch before the series concludes Friday night at LeLacheur for Lahey Health Night with post-game fireworks.
