Scrappers Dropped by Auburn

July 15, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

After splitting the six-game road trip and winning two of their last three, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (8-16) fell to the Auburn Doubledays (10-13) 11-3 at Eastwood Field on Wednesday night in front of 3,323 fans.

The Scrappers fall to 1-8 at home this season. The pitching has been lucky. Most of the damage against Scrapper pitching has been because of walks, not so much the big hits. High hit and walk counts hurt Mahoning Valley on Wednesday night. The Scrappers gave up 13 hits and eight walks.

Although the Scrappers got a home run for Silento Sayles in the bottom of the third, that was pretty much it. In the top of the fourth, Andrew Stevenson scored on a Kelvin Gutierrez sacrifice fly to right. Max Schrock later scored on a David Kerian single up the middle. Jimmy Stokes came into the game after starter Josh Tomlin threw his 65 pitches. Kerian later scored on an Edwin Lora single to right. Jakson Reetz and Ian Sagdal scored because of an error charged to Connor Marabell in right field.

Auburn added three more in the sixth. Sagdal scored on a Rafael Bautista single to right. Lora scored on a Stevenson sacrifice fly, and Bautista scored on a fielding error by Shao-Ching Chiang. Auburn led 8-1 after five.

In the eighth, Mahoning Valley got two. Ka'ai Tom walked to score Marabell. Later, Sam Haggerty scored on a sacrifice fly for Mark Mathias.

The Doubledays added three more in the top of the ninth against Jose Zapata. Kerian scored on a Lora double to right. Reetz scored on a single for Bautista, and Lora scored as well.

Taylor Hearn (1-1) was solid in his second start of the year. He got the win, going five innings giving up just three hits and striking out five. The Scrapper pitching wasn't great from the beginning. Tomlin (0-1) earned the loss in his rehab outing. He went three and two-thirds giving up three hits and three earned runs.

The Scrappers and Doubledays play the second game of a three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05. Casey Shane gets the ball for the Scrappers against Jefry Rodriguez.
