Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
LOWELL, MA-The Connecticut Tigers (11-13) dropped the opening game of a three game series with the Lowell Spinners (15-10) on Wednesday night 7-4. Connecticut has now lost five of their last seven games.
Spenser Watkins (2-2) started the game for Connecticut and to this point in the season he had been one of the top starters in the league. Coming into the game Watkins was leading the league in ERA (0.89) and was second in batting average against (.159). However, on this night Watkins struggled working just four and two thirds innings allowing five runs (three earned) and striking out five while walking two and hitting another.
The Tigers scored first when they pushed a run across in the third. Designated hitter Steven Fuentes reached on an error to start the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by third basemen Josh Lester (1-4, 2 RBI).
Lowell responded with two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead but Connecticut quickly answered back. In the top of the fifth the first three batters reached to load the bases. Lester followed with an RBI ground out and after RBI singles by catcher Will Allen (2-4, RBI) and shortstop AJ Wilcox the Tigers led 4-2.
The lead was short lived. In the bottom half of the inning right fielder Luis Alexander Basebe (2-5, 2 RBI) hit a one out solo homerun to bring the Spinners within one. For Basabe it was his league tying fifth homerun of the year. Still in the fifth and with two men on Lowell took the lead for good on an error making it 5-4. Lowell would tack on single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Connecticut loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth but Lowell brought in Bobby Poyner (SV 3) and he struck out the first two batters he faced and then got a fly ball to seal the deal. The win went to Matt Kent (2-0) after he worked three shutout innings allowing four hits and striking out two.
Connecticut will play Lowell tomorrow at home in the middle game of the game series. The first pitch on Monday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
