-SPIKES FACE BLACK BEARS IN TRIP TO WEST VIRGINIA: Today, the State College Spikes continue their 10th Season as they hit the road to start a three-game series at Monongalia County Ballpark against their Pinckney Division foes, the West Virginia Black Bears, tonight. The Spikes took two out of three games from the Black Bears at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park July 1-3, and are coming off a 3-3 homestand against a pair of Stedler Division opponents, Connecticut and Tri-City. All-time, State College holds a 48-45 record against the West Virginia franchise, including games played against Jamestown from 2006 to 2014. The Spikes have never before visited Monongalia County Ballpark, but went 24-22 in games played in Jamestown over the club's first nine seasons in Central PA.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes produced 13 hits, including four by Leobaldo Pina, and propelled themselves to a 7-2 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Monday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Pina, who also knocked in two runs, became the third Spikes player with a four-hit game this season, following Ronnierd Garcia and Mike Pritchard. The shortstop also beat out a pair of infield singles as part of his performance. Pritchard also sparked the State College offense with three stolen bases on the day, including two in the first inning, and added an RBI single in the second. The Spikes scored in each of the first four innings to take a 6-1 lead, with Pina driving in two runs and Thomas Spitz bringing in another with a second-inning triple. Brian O'Keefe brought the last State College run with a painful RBI as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth. State College also received a strong pitching effort, beginning with Carson Cross. The-right-handed allowed one unearned run on three hits while recording one strikeout over four innings of work.
-McKINNEY HEADS TO MOUND FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Ian McKinney gets the ball for State College tonight in his first road start of the 2015 NYPL season. McKinney took his second victory of the year this past Wednesday against Connecticut when he tossed six scoreless innings in a game shortened to seven innings by rain. The Orlando, FL native gave up just three hits and a walk while striking out four in the effort. The fifth-round draft choice of the Cardinals in 2013, McKinney made two starts for the Spikes last season, once during the season's opening week and another on July 29 before going down with an injury. In between, the lefty twice won Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week honors for Rookie-level Johnson City.
-BLACK BEARS GO WITH BRUBAKER: Right-hander Jonathan Brubaker gets the start for West Virginia in his fifth appearance of the year. Brubaker faced the Spikes on July 3 in State College and drew the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings. The sixth-round draft choice of the Pirates in 2015, Brubaker, nicknamed "JT," made 15 starts on the mound for the University of Akron this spring. The righty struck out 72 batters over 89.1 innings and put together a 5-4 record.
-GRAYSON DELIVERING BIG NUMBERS: Casey Grayson has reached base in all 22 games he has played so far to post the longest active streak in the New York-Penn League, and put himself just four games shy of the franchise record for most consecutive games reaching base, set by Rowan Wick last year. Grayson and has also put together a 13-game hitting streak, which is the longest such active string in the league. The University of Houston product still leads the NYPL in batting average with a .403 mark, and his .465 on-base percentage is tops in the league.
-SPIKE MARKS: Pedro Echemendia is tied for the NYPL lead in appearances with nine...Landon Beck is second in the league with a 0.76 WHIP...Mike Pritchard is tied for third in the NYPL with 16 runs scored...Grayson has scored 15 runs to tie for sixth in the league...The Spikes are tied with Auburn for the best team batting average at .257, and their 201 hits as a team are second in the NYPL behind Tri-City at 210
