Auburn Doubledays News Release

NILES, OH - The Doubledays dominated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in game one of a three-game series in Ohio to the tune of a 11-3 road victory. Auburn has now scored 10 or more runs in three of its last five games.

The Doubledays went down 1-0 in the third when Silento Sayles hit a solo homer, but the Scrappers' lead didn't last long. Facing Josh Tomlin, a MLB starting pitcher for the Cleveland Indians rehabbing in Mahoning Valley, the Doubledays struck for the first time in the fourth.

Andrew Stevenson tripled to lead off the fourth to extend his hit-streak to a team-high 11. He came in to score when Kelvin Gutierrez hit a sacrifice fly for the second out of the inning. The next batter Max Schrock then started a streak of five hitters in a row who reached base. Schrock and the next three hitters all scored as the Doubledays took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth.

The Doubledays waited until the sixth to pad their lead. Ian Sagdal walked and then Edwin Lora singled to put runners on first and third. Rafael Bautista stepped up next and drove in Sagdal while moving Lora to first to give the Doubledays a 6-1 lead. Lora then scored on a sacrifice fly from Stevenson. Bautista moved to third on a groundout from Rhett Wiseman, and then scored when Kelvin Gutierrez reached on an error by the pitcher Shao-Ching Chang to put the Doubledays up 8-1.

The Scrappers responded in the eighth. After Connor Marabell was hit by a pitch to end a streak of 13 in a row retired, Sam Haggerty reached on an error by Schrock at second. The pair later scored when Tom Ka'ai worked a bases loaded walk and Mark Mathias hit a sacrifice fly. This put the score at 8-3 heading into the ninth.

But the Doubledays weren't scoring. Auburn added three runs in the ninth on an RBI double from Edwin Lora and 2-run single off the bat of Bautista. The double and single gave the Doubledays an 11-3 lead they would eventually win by.

Taylor Hearn started for the Doubledays and dominated the Scrappers. The 5th round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals earned his first victory with the following line: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 5 K's.

The Doubledays look to make it three wins in a row Thursday at 7:05 PM against the Scrappers. Jefry Rodriguez (1-2) starts for Auburn against Casey Shane (0-2) for Mahoning Valley.
