
Despite Four-Run Third Inning, Black Bears Fall 10-7 to State College

West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears were defeated by the State College Spikes 10-7 in the first game of the series on Wednesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the loss, West Virginia falls to 10-14 on the season while State College improves to 12-12 overall.
The teams were scoreless over the first two innings until the Black Bears offense started rolling in the third inning. RF Logan Hill got the team on the board with a two-run double, scoring both SS Kevin Newman and LF Ty Moore. Later in the inning, DH Chris Harvey reached on a throwing error, which scored two runners as the ball sailed into right field to give the Black Bears a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, SP Jonathan Brubaker ran into trouble and yielded five runs to the Spikes. West Virginia tied the game back up 5-5 in the bottom half of the inning when Moore hit into a double play, scoring CF Alexis Bastardo from third base. State College tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning which was followed by a two-run frame by the Black Bears. The Spikes added on two more insurance runs in the ninth inning before the Black Bears went down in order to end the game.
SP Jonathan Brubaker pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) and scattering six hits. RP Juan Paula received the loss (0-1) after pitching one inning in his return to the team and allowed three runs (all earned). Hill paced the offense for the Black Bears by going 3-for-5 from the plate with a three RBI.
The Black Bears will face the Spikes again on Thursday night when there will be an Italian Heritage Night at Monongalia County Ballpark with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m.
