Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Staten Island, NY- The Staten Island Yankees took game two of the double-header with the Aberdeen IronBirds, 7-3. Aberdeen falls to 20-20 on the year while Staten Island moves to 17- 23.
The IronBirds led this game through one and a half innings after they scored two runs on three hits. Left fielder Sam Kimmel led off the ball game when he reached on an error by pitcher David Palladino. Kimmel came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of designated hitter Trey Mancini.
In the top of the second inning, the first three IronBirds batters reached on singles. Catcher Jack Graham came up and grounded into a double play with the bases loaded that scored first baseman Tanner Rust and made it 2-0 Aberdeen.
Staten Island then scored seven unanswered runs beginning in the bottom of the second inning.
Third baseman Kale Sumner hit a two-RBI single into the left field corner that scored right fielder Yeicok Calderon and short stop Jose Rosario. Sumner was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double. That hit tied the score at 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Yankees blew the doors open with a five-run frame. The first four batters reached off of IronBirds' starting pitcher Jorge Rivera. The fourth batter was Yankees' first baseman Mike Ford who drew a bases loaded walk.
Rivera was then replaced by Alex Santana. Santana faced left fielder Daniel Lopez, who lined a double down the line in left and cleared the bases. All three runs were charged to Rivera. Staten Island catcher Trent Garrison hit a sacrifice fly to score Lopez and it was 7-2 Yankees over the IronBirds.
The IronBirds would score one in the fifth to make it 7-3, but that was the last run scored by either team. The IronBirds left the bases loaded three times tonight and a total of 12 runners overall.
Rivera pitched three innings, giving up three hits, six runs (five earned), four walks and he struck out two. Palladino went four innings for the Yankees, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned), four walks and he tallied four strikeouts as well.
Charles Haslup picks up the win in relief for Staten Island and improves his record to 2-0. Haslup went one and two-thirds innings pitched in which he gave up four hits, one run (none earned), no walks and rung up two.
Rivera takes the loss for the IronBirds and falls to 2-1 on the year.
Aberdeen heads home for a six-game home stand. They will play the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for three starting tomorrow night. After that they host the Tri-City ValleyCats for a three-game series.
