Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Luis Baez had a pair of RBI singles and the Vermont Lake Monsters took advantage of two Lowell errors in the bottom of the ninth inning to scored a game-ending unearned run for a 3-2 New York-Penn League victory over the Spinners on Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

Vermont trailed 2-1 in the eighth inning when Michael Soto walked with one out, advanced to second when Jaycob Brugman was hit by a pitch and scored on a Baez groundball single to center field to tie the game. Then leading off in the ninth, Wilfredo Solano reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin and moved to third on Boog Powell's second sacrifice bunt of the game.

After back-to-back intentional walks loaded the bases with one out, Ryon Healy hit a one-hopper back to the mound for a potential inning-ending double play. But pitcher Greg Larson's throw to the plate was low and off the glove of catcher Danny Bethea for a throwing error allowing Solano to score the winning run.

Lowell had scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the fourth on a run-scoring wild pitch by Lake Monsters reliever Lee Sosa and a sacrifice fly to center by Jose Colorado. Vermont got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Soto led off with a double to straightaway center and Baez lined a one-out RBI single to left.

Jerad Grundy (2-2) tossed the final three innings for Vermont, allowing just one hit with one walk and four strikeouts to earn the win. Larson (0-3) was charged with the unearned run in the ninth inning to take the loss for Lowell (22-18) after Spinners reliever Simon Mercedes had allowed two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

The win was the 10th in the last 13 games for the Lake Monsters, who were  4-1 on the homestand, and moved Vermont (22-20) back to a season-high two games over the .500 mark. The Lake Monsters head out on a six-game roadtrip to Hudson Valley and State College before returning to Centennial for a six-game homestand August 6-11.
