Lowell Spinners News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - A comebacker to the mound and potential inning ending double play turned into a nightmare for the Lowell Spinners as the throw got past the catcher allowing the winning run to score as the Vermont Lake Monsters stole a 3-2 walk-off win from the Spinners Monday night at Centennial Field.
The loss extended a streak of alternating wins and losses the Spinners have been on since July 11.
Lowell (22-18) had the first chance to get on the board in the top half of the second inning. After a pair of quick outs, Aaron King and Cleuluis Rondon picked up back-to-back singles. A walk to Jose Colorado loaded the bases but the Lake Monsters went to the bullpen and Bobby Wahl got Jantzen Witte to line out to end the inning.
The Lake Monsters left a pair on in both the second and third innings and the Spinners took advantage in the fourth inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Danny Bethea and King led off with back-to-back singles, with Rondon moving both men into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With Colorado at the plate, a wild pitch brought in Bethea and King scored on a sacrifice fly from Colorado to give the Spinners the early lead.
Vermont (22-20) cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning as Michael Soto doubled to center to lead off the inning. After an out, Luis Baez singled to left, scoring Soto and cutting the Spinners lead to 2-1.
The Lake Monsters would put the leadoff man on in the sixth and seventh inning, but Simon Mercedes escaped trouble in each situation. In the bottom half of the eighth inning, Mercedes once again found himself in a bit of trouble after a one-out walk by Soto and a hit-by-pitch put the go-ahead man on first. Baez delivered again, singling up the middle to tie the score at two, as both runners advanced into scoring position on a throwing error by Colorado. The Lake Monsters attempted a failed squeeze play however, as Josh Miller popped up the bunt and Mercedes doubled off Brugman to end the threat with the score tied at two.
After the Spinners were held off the board in the top half of the ninth, Tzu-Wei Lin threw away a ground ball from Wil Solano to lead off the bottom half of the inning. Powell sacrificed him to third and the Spinners opted to walk both B.J. Boyd and Tyler Marincov to load the bases and set up the force at all bases. A ground ball back to Greg Larson set-up the perfect situation, but Bethea couldn't handle the throw, allowing Solano to score and the Lake Monsters walked off with a 3-2 win.
Offensively, the Spinners were led by King and Rondon who each had two hits. King snapped a 0-for-18 streak with his two hits, while Bethea picked up a hit in his fourth straight game since joining the team.
Corey Littrell started for the Spinners and went a season-high 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit and two walks, striking out four. Mercedes followed with 5.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, striking out a season-best seven batters. Larson (0-3, 1.93) was tagged with the loss after a pair of walks and a pair of errors.
The Spinners look to get back on track and get a winning stretch rolling when they kick-off a six-game homestand when the Auburn Doubledays come to town Tuesday evening. Reigning New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week Jamie Callahan is on the mound for the Spinners for a 7:05 first pitch.
