Callahan Named NYPL Pitcher of the Week
July 29, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced Monday that right-handed pitcher Jamie Callahan has been named New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 28.
Callahan, a second round pick of the Red Sox in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, had not pitched in 13 days when he took the mound in Game One of the Spinners' double header against the Connecticut Tigers Friday, July 26.
If there was any rust it did not show, as Callahan set down the first 15 Tigers batters he faced before allowing a lead-off single in the sixth inning. A double play erased the runner and Callahan left having pitched six innings, facing the minimum, striking out eight.
For the season, Callahan has posted a 2-1 record with a 4.55 ERA in six starts. He has struck out 23 while walking nine in 27.2 innings pitched. Most impressively, Callahan is accomplishing this as the youngest pitcher in the New York-Penn League.
Callahan became the first Spinners pitcher to win Pitcher of the Week honors since Raynel Velette captured the award after the first week of the 2012 season.
Callahan and the Spinners return to LeLacheur Park Tuesday, July 30, when the reigning Pitcher of the Week takes the mound against the Auburn Doubledays at 7:05. Tickets for that game and all six-games during the Spinners homestand are available at www.LowellSpinners.com.
