Phillips Shuts out ValleyCats

Troy, NY - The Connecticut Tigers (18-23) defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats (26-16) by a score of 2-0 Monday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The key player of the game was LHP Alex Phillips (2-0) who picked up his second win of the season as he pitched six scoreless innings allowing six hits and struck out three batters.

In the third inning CF Austin Schotts (2-4) hit an RBI single that scored LF Kasey Coffman (1-3) to take an early 1-0 lead. There was no other scoring until the ninth inning when RHP Andrew Walter attempted a pick-off attempt at first base that hit 1B Patrick Leyland (0-2) and the ball traveled down the right field line and scored RF Raph Rhymes (2-3) from third base to take a 2-0 lead.

The ValleyCats hit the ball well as they had nine total hits on the night, but struggled with runners on base as they went 1-6 and left eight total on base. RHP Tanner Bailey picked up his second hold of the season. Bailey got CF James Ramsey (1-4) to pop out with the bases loaded to end the threat. RHP Johnnie Kirkland picked up his first save of the season pitching two scoreless innings.

The Tigers and Batavia Muckdogs start a three-game series tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium at 7:05 p.m. In game one RHP Jonathon Crawford (0-1, 3.15) gets the start for the Tigers.
