Bounced by Brooklyn

Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY (July 28, 2013) - MCU Park in Brooklyn has never been known as a hitter's ballpark because it's located on the shores of Coney Island where the wind blows in and keeps balls in the park. Yet on Sunday night, the Cyclones went deep twice in a ballgame for just the first time this season in a 4-2 victory over the Renegades. After splitting the first six meetings to open the regular season, the Cyclones improved to 4-3 as the teams prepare to close out the short two-game series in Brooklyn on Monday night.

The starting pitching matchup between lefty Kevin Brandt and John Gant was certainly an interesting one because both hurlers used similar approaches to rack up seven strikeouts each. Brandt picked up two in the bottom of the first but not before Brooklyn got a two-out single from L.J. Mazzilli and an RBI double from Jared King to take a 1-0 lead.

Hudson Valley answered in the top of the third after Ryan McChesney gave the 'Gades their first baserunner with a leadoff single. James Harris' hard grounder to third was misplayed by Anthony Chavez, but the left fielder King cut it off quickly and threw out at Harris at second for the first out. With McChesney at third, John Alexander tied the ballgame with an opposite field RBI single to left.

In the home fifth, with the score still tied at one, the first shots rang out as Brooklyn seized control of the momentum. First baseman Alex Sanchez led off with a double to right-center, but Brandt responded by retiring the next two hitters. However, he hung a 3-2 pitch to Chavez, who crushed it over the left field wall to give the Cyclones a 3-1 lead.

With a chance to tie the game in the sixth, the 'Gades had the bases loaded with one out. Gant (2-2) balked in a run to make it 3-2, but with runners at second and third, he struck out Ariel Soriano and Omar Narvaez to end the inning and his night.

Brooklyn added another run in the seventh thanks to Sanchez' first home run, a solo shot to left which added a run and made it 4-2. Down to their final three outs in the ninth, Soriano banged a one-out single into left to bring the tying run to the plate. But Narvaez grounded into a game-ending double play to give the Cyclones a victory to close out the weekend.

Notes: Brandt (4-3) had won his last three starts...the seven strikeouts are a new season high as he lost to the Cyclones for the third time this season...the Renegades did not have a baserunner in the seventh and eighth, and the side struck out against Tim Peterson in the seventh...Harmen Sidhu's appearance in the seventh inning was his first since a three-inning save in Vermont on July 7.

The series wraps up on Monday night in Brooklyn at 7:00 PM. Follow the game by tuning in at 6:45 for the Pregame Show on the Renegades Radio Network, 1450-WKIP, which can be accessed by visiting the team's website. The Renegades return to Dutchess Stadium for the start of a six-game homestand on Tuesday, July 30 for the start of a three-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters.
