State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES HIT ROAD TO FINISH SHORT SET AGAINST MUCKDOGS: The State College Spikes complete a two-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs tonight at Dwyer Stadium. State College is coming off of a two-game sweep of Auburn at home, and looks to snap an nine-game losing streak on the road. The Spikes are 11-3 in their last 14 home games. Batavia holds a 4-3 lead in the season series. The Spikes currently sit two games out of the league's Wild Card lead. State College is 36-41 all-time against the Muckdogs, and 16-22 in road games in the all-time series.

-LAST NIGHT: David Washington produced the eighth four-hit game for a Spikes player in 2013, but two big innings were the difference as the Batavia Muckdogs took a 10-5 decision on Sunday evening at Dwyer Stadium. Washington went 4-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored and two runs batted in to lead the way for State College. The big man combined with Bruce Caldwell to have a hand in every Spikes run, as Caldwell also contributed three hits, including a double. The Spikes took a 4-0 lead in the game after three innings, but saw the advantage evaporate after a five-run fourth inning from Batavia. After Washington knocked in the tying run in the fifth for State College, the Muckdogs produced four more runs in the sixth to establish a deficit the Spikes could not overcome.

-PETREE, REED GO TO HILL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Nick Petree leads the way in a "piggyback" tandem on the mound for State College tonight against the Muckdogs. Petree, the ninth-round draft choice of the Cardinals in 2013, went three shutout innings in his last start against Mahoning Valley in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Petree will be followed by left-hander Jimmy Reed, who went a career-long six innings in game one of Wednesday's twin bill. Reed allowed one run in the start and did not get a decision.

-GARNER GETS MOUND ASSIGNMENT FOR BATAVIA: Right-hander Max Garner gets the ball for the Muckdogs this evening, one night later than anticipated. Garner was originally to start Sunday's game before a rainout on Saturday pushed back the rotation. The 18th-round selection of the Marlins in the 2013 MLB Draft, Garner was a closer at Baylor with 18 career saves before transitioning to the starting rotation and earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors this past spring.

-STATE COLLEGE MOUND STAFF STIFLING HITTERS: Despite allowing the most runs in a single game this season during last night's game, the Spikes dropped back to just five points behind the leader in the New York-Penn League's team ERA leaderboard. The Spikes now hold a 2.68 mark, which is good for third place behind Tri-City at 2.63 and Brooklyn at 2.64 Kevin Herget is now tied for the NYPL lead in wins with four.

-SPIKE MARKS: 2009 Spikes pitcher Victor Black made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, becoming the 21st player to reach the major leagues after playing in State College...Black recorded the final out of the eighth inning...Steven Ramos dropped back to second in the NYPL batting race...Ramos, at .360, is now 10 points back of Batavia's Avery Romero....Jimmy Bosco leads the NYPL in triples with six
