
Iowa Takes Series with Second Walk-Off Win

DES MOINES, IA - After a four-run ninth inning last night, the Iowa Cubs (43-29) used a five-run ninth inning to beat the Memphis Redbirds (38-36) by a score of 7-5, Saturday at Principal Park.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings, as Nick Neidert and Michael McGreevy kept the opposing offenses off balance.
Memphis cracked the scoreboard first, as Masyn Winn clubbed a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. It stayed 1-0 until the fifth, when Iowa scored two runs on an RBI double from Yonathan Perlaza.
It stayed 2-1 through six innings, as Neidert delivered his longest start of the year. The righty allowed just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out four. Luken Baker tied the game in the seventh with a solo home run of his own, making it 2-2.
The Redbirds regained the lead in the ninth, scoring on a wild pitch and two more runs on a double from Chad Pinder. Trailing 5-2 in their last at-bat, Iowa stormed all the way back for their second walk-off win in as many nights.
Jake Slaughter started the comeback with a solo home run, followed by an RBI double from Bryce Windham and an RBI single from Darius Hill. With the game tied 5-5, Jared Young clubbed a two-run home run, earning Iowa the series win over Memphis.
POSTGAME NOTES:
After four runs in the ninth inning last night, Iowa scored five in the ninth tonight, getting back-to-back walk-off home runs over the Redbirds. Their nine ninth inning runs in the last two nights have accounted for 23% (9-of-39) of their total runs in the ninth inning this year.
Bryce Windham raised his team-leading batting average to .353 with a 2-for-3 performance tonight. Each of his hits were doubles, as the catcher scored two runs, drove in a run and walked once.
Iowa and Memphis will the sixth and final game of their series tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch from Principal Park scheduled for 1:08 pm.
