Iowa Rolls to Sixth Straight Win

June 1, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

OKLAHOMA CITY - Drew Rucinski pitched seven strong innings as the Iowa Cubs (25-26) won their sixth straight game, downing the Oklahoma City Dodgers (26-25) 5-4, Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

After giving up a first-inning run to the Dodgers, Rucinski rebounded to allow just five hits through the next six frames, while striking out seven total and only issuing one walk. The righty earned his second consecutive win and improved to 4-4 on the season.

Entering the ninth with a 5-2 lead, the I-Cubs had almost closed the door on the ballgame, before three walks from Carl Edwards Jr. loaded the bases for Oklahoma City. The Dodgers were down to their final strike, but Scott Van Slyke roped a single to left field to pull the home team within one and keep the game alive. Edwards Jr. was able to dial in and struck out Austin Barnes to put the cap on an Iowa win and take his first save of the season.

Oklahoma City was the first to score, but Iowa responded quickly with a second-inning run, thanks to a leadoff triple from Dan Vogelbach, his first of the season and sixth of his career. Willson Contreras then broke the 1-1 tie in the next frame with an RBI double that extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Vogelbach helped the I-Cubs to another run in the fourth, leading off with a double. Albert Almora Jr. came through with an RBI single to give Iowa the 3-1 edge.

Oklahoma City responded in the bottom of the inning with a run of its own as Barnes knocked a leadoff single and Corey Brown followed with a walk. The Dodgers executed the double steal to put both runners in scoring position for Rob Segedin. Segedin knocked in one run with a sacrifice fly, but Rucinski was able to limit the damage by forcing a double play to get out of the inning.

Both teams were quiet until seventh when Logan Watkins took a one-out walk to ignite the I-Cubs scoring drive and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Rucinski. This time, it was Arismendy Alcantara with the big hit as he drilled a triple to center field to bring in Watkins and give Iowa necessary insurance. Contreras helped the cause as well, following with an RBI single to cap a two-hit night.

Iowa and Oklahoma City meet again at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, tomorrow at 7:08 p.m. Catch all the action on AM 940 or at www.iowacubs.com.
