Fresno Grizzlies News Release

The Albuquerque Isotopes outlasted the Fresno Grizzlies 5-3 Tuesday night in the Grizzlies' first of two visits to Isotopes Park this season. It was a match-up of opposite-handed top pitching prospects separated by only a vowel, in case of surname; 'Topes lefty Harrison Musgrave toed the rubber against Grizz right-hander Joe Musgrove.

The Isotopes jumped on top of Musgrove in the first, with four consecutive base hits to begin the game, the third of which was a three-run homer by Stephen Cardullo to left field. Cardullo's sixth longball of the season spotted Albuquerque a 3-0 lead after an inning. A Tom Murphy RBI groundout in the third made it a 4-0 Isotopes advantage.

Musgrave (win, 2-1) would go just five innings for Albuquerque despite his scoreless outing, allowing five hits and five walks, with three strikeouts.

Musgrove (loss, 2-1) also went five, and allowed very little after the early struggles. All four runs scored on the Astros' top pitching prospect were earned on nine hits. He struck out one and walked one.

Grizz reliever Chris Cotton nearly escaped a runners at second and third with nobody out jam unscathed in the 6th, but a Mike Tauchman RBI infield single with two out made the score 5-0 Isotopes.

Fresno broke up the shutout in the seventh, scoring thrice with RBI hits from Matt Duffy and Jon Singleton (2-for-4). Danny Worth led the inning with a walk, and moved to third on A.J. Reed's double to right. Duffy scored Worth with an RBI single to right, and then Reed and Duffy came home on Singleton's two-run double to center. The Grizzlies cut the 'Topes lead to 5-3 at the stretch.

Despite consecutive 1-2-3 innings from Cotton and Jandel Gustave in the seventh and eighth to keep the Grizz within striking distance, Fresno could not mount a rally against the Albuquerque bullpen. Jason Gurka earned his second save of the season in a perfect ninth, with a pair of strikeouts. Andrew Aplin enjoyed a 3-for-5 night for the Grizzlies in defeat, his first three-hit game of the season.

Game two of the four game set will be Wednesday evening at Isotopes Park, a 6:05 PT / 7:05 MT first pitch. RHP Brady Rodgers (3-3, 3.64) is the scheduled starter for Fresno, opposite LHP Tyler Anderson (0-0, 1.50) for Albuquerque (Colorado Rockies).
