Reno Aces News Release
RENO - The Reno Aces erased an early deficit with nine runs over the final four innings to defeat the Las Vegas 51s, 10-6, Tuesday night at Greater Nevada Field. Peter O'Brien, Sócrates Brito (@SocratesBrito) and Kyle Jensen combined for eight hits - including six extra-base knocks - and seven RBI in the win.
Las Vegas (27-24) built a 5-1 lead through 4 1/2 innings behind two runs in the second, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Two-out, run-scoring singles from 51s starter Seth Lugo and Dilson Herrera in the second gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage after the Aces grabbed the early lead on an RBI groundout by O'Brien in the first. Herrera added another two-out RBI single in the fourth, and consecutive run-scoring doubles from Matt Reynolds and Gavin Cecchini in the fifth pushed their lead to four.
Reno (25-26) rebounded promptly in the home half of the fifth on O'Brien's first of two RBI doubles and second of a career-high-tying three doubles on the night. Jensen then belted his fifth homer of the season in the sixth, bringing the Aces within two.
The 51s dipped into their bullpen in the seventh, and the Aces' offense quickly erupted for four runs against reliever Zack Thornton. Reno sent nine batters to the plate and received run-scoring hits from O'Brien, Carlos Rivero (@Carlos_Rivero3) and Tuffy Gosewisch (@santiagosewisch). Rivero's two-out, two-run single to right with the bases loaded gave the Aces the lead for good.
The visitors cut into Reno's two-run lead on a solo shot by Brandon Nimmo in the eighth, but the Aces added three insurance runs in the bottom half to run away as victors. With two on and one away, Brito lined a single to right, bringing in Mike Freeman (@MikeBFree5) who opened the inning with a walk. Moments later, Jensen rocketed his 16th double down the left-field line, plating two more.
Andrew Chafin (@BigCountry1739) improved to 1-0 in his first appearance for the Aces this season. He struck out two batters in his only inning of work. Thornton (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits in one inning.
Zack Godley (@godleyzt) took a no-decision in his second start with Reno. He lasted five innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits with a career-high five walks and six strikeouts. Lugo did not factor into the decision either, despite allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits over six frames.
The Aces continue their four-game set against Las Vegas with game two Wednesday night at Greater Nevada Field. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. PT. Reno will send right-hander Kyle Drabek (3-3, 5.27) to the bump, while southpaw Duane Below (4-3, 3.70) will toe the rubber for Las Vegas.
