Iowa Cubs News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Iowa Cubs (24-26) carried their hot bats to Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark as they downed the Oklahoma City Dodgers (26-24), 11-6 Tuesday night. Iowa extended its win streak to a season-best five games.
A one hour and 23-minute delay prior to first pitch didn't slow Iowa, but left the Dodgers off guard as two of the I-Cubs' first three batters reached on fielding errors to boost the visitors to an early 1-0 lead. Daniel Vogelbach followed with an RBI single and later in the inning, Logan Watkins drilled a double and John Andreoli a triple to give Iowa a 4-0 edge.
In the third, Dan Vogelbach cracked his eighth homer of the season with a solo shot to left field, collecting his second RBI of the game.
Oklahoma City found their footing in the bottom of the frame, as two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. Iowa starter Alex Sanbia nearly got out of the jam, but Zach Walters won the battle with a bases-clearing triple to inch the Dodgers within two.
RBI singles from Arismendy Alcantara and Willson Contreras in fourth put distance between the two clubs once again as Iowa jumped in front, 7-3.
The I-Cubs pounced on Oklahoma City again in the sixth. Munenori Kawasaki sparked the effort with a leadoff double, but was erased from the bases when pinch-hitter David Bote hit into a fielder's choice. Alcantara followed with a single to put two on for Contreras, who came through with a two-RBI triple, his second of the season. Albert Almora Jr., Vogelbach and Watkins also recorded singles in the inning as the I-Cubs batted around and ended up with a sturdy 11-3 lead.
The game was almost in the books, but the Dodgers refused to go quietly. Entering to close the game, Spencer Patton sat down the first batter on strikes, but surrendered four consecutive hits to get tagged with three runs, though only two were earned. Patton fought back to retire the next two batters and secure the I-Cubs' win.
Sanabia (1-1) lasted five innings, allowing three runs on five hits to claim his first win for Iowa. Out of the bullpen, Armando Rivero contributed two scoreless frames. It was his fourth straight outing tossing two scoreless innings. Giovanni Soto also gave Iowa a perfect inning in relief.
All eight starting position players tallied at least one hit, with Alcantara, Contreras, Vogelbach, Watkins and Kawasaki all collecting multi-hit games. Iowa managed 16 hits, six for extra bases, despite striking out a season-high 15 times.
Iowa and Oklahoma City face-off again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. To catch the action, tune in to AM 940 or follow along on www.iowacubs.com.
