Iowa Cubs News Release
SACRAMENTO, CA - The Iowa Cubs (40-67) tagged the Sacramento River Cats (44-64) for a three-run first, a pair in the second and one apiece in the third, seventh and ninth take an 8-1 win and a series victory, Monday at Raley Field.
Chris Coghlan ignited the I-Cub offense with a leadoff single in the first, as Mark Zagunis roped a liner to center to set up Ryan Court's 17th double of the season- extending his on-base streak to 24 games. Jason Vosler followed suit soon after, as he hit a bases-clearing two-RBI single for a 3-0 game after one.
The I-Cubs continued to keep the line moving in the second, as Trey Martin's lead-off double and Duane Underwood Jr.'s (W, 4-9) sac-bunt brought Coghlan back up to bat. The outfielder collected his second hit on the day and an RBI, for a 5-0 lead.
Underwood Jr. locked down the River Cats for six frames, surrendering just one run in the second off a solo shot from Chris Shaw. The righty gave up five hits without issuing a walk while striking out four en route to his fifth quality start of the season.
It was a different story across the lines, as former Cub farmhand Daniel Camarena (L, 0-6) was rocked for six runs on nine hits, before right-hander Jose Valdez relieved the righty after three innings.
The game's run production halted in the middle frames, as Vosler and Chris Gimenez strung together a single and double to set up Martin's sac-fly to push the lead to 6-1 in the third, where it would stay until the seventh.
On a wild-pitch dropped third strike, Rademacher scored the I-Cubs' seventh run of the game off heads-up base running, scoring from second after notching a base hit and stolen base. Two frames later, Martin would come through again, securing his second RBI with a bases-loaded single in the ninth.
Sacramento used five arms, including former I-Cub Manny Parra, to quiet the I-Cub bats for the remainder of the game, but not before the offense tallied 13 hits to Sacramento's six. Five I-Cubs collected a pair of hits--including, Coghlan, Rademacher, Court, Vosler, and Martin, with the latter three each driving in a pair of runs.
Brad Markey held the lead, tossing two hitless innings before handing the reigns to Dillon Maples for the last three outs. Maples struck out the side, giving up one hit on three walks for his 19th-consecutive outing without an earned run.
The I-Cubs head home to begin a seven-game homestand with Salt Lake and Las Vegas after a travel day on Tuesday. Promotions include Kids Night Wednesday and a 2018 Team Card Set giveaway Thursday. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
