Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Toledo Mud Hens (65-47) held off the Iowa Cubs' (46-66) late rally, winning a pitcher's duel by a score of 3-2, Friday at Principal Park.
Matt Swarmer made his third quality start in his last four games, tossing seven innings of two-run ball. The righty allowed just four total hits while setting a career, high striking out 10 batters.
Josh Lester provided all of the offense Toledo got against Swarmer, blasting two solo home runs. He hit one out in the third and again in his next at-bat in the fifth to give Mark Leiter Jr. a 2-0 lead.
That is all he would need, as Leiter Jr. spun seven scoreless innings of his own, allowing just four hits while striking out 14. Iowa climbed back into the game in the eighth, when Trayce Thompson drove in a run off of reliever Will Vest.
The Mud hens extended their lead in the ninth inning, manufacturing a run against reliever Dakota Mekkes. Greg Deichmann cut into the lead with a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally would end there as Toledo recorded the final three outs to take a 3-2 win.
