18 Strikeouts Ties Franchise Record in Tides' Win over Durham

The Norfolk Tides beat the Durham Bulls, 6-5, Thursday night. As a team, the Tides struck out 18 hitters, which tied a club record for the most as an Orioles affiliate (since 2007). They last struck out 18 on April 12, 2015 at Charlotte.

The Bulls put most of their runs on the board in the first inning by crossing the plate three times on three hits and a walk. Estaban Quiroz led off with a walk and scored on a double by Taylor Walls. Walls would score on a single by Dalton Kelly. With two outs, Kelly scored on a double by Nathan Lukes to give Durham the early, 3-0, lead

Yusniel Diaz was able to help the Tides get a run back in the top half of the second. With runners on first and third, Diaz hit a single to right field to bring the Tides within two, down 3-1.

The Tides took the lead in the fifth inning, exploding for five runs. After Rylan Bannon singled up the middle and Kyle Stowers recorded his first Triple-A hit, Tyler Nevin brought them both in with a three-run homer.

With two outs in the sixth, Pat Valaika extended the inning with a single and then scored on the second home run of the inning, a bomb by J.C. Escarra, making it 6-3.

Durham was able to scratch one run across in response during the bottom-half on an RBI fielder's choice to make it, 6-4. They tried to make a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth as well. They were able to score on an RBI double by Rene Pinto. But with runners on second and third and two outs, Felix Bautista was able to close the door and earned the save in a 6-5 win.

Ofelky Peralta only lasted 4.1 innings but struck out nine batters. The winning pitcher Konner Wade had four strikeouts in 1.2 innings, and Zack Burdi struck out three hitters in his one inning. Bautista struck out two in the ninth to total the 18 punch outs.

Tomorrow night, the Tides look to get a win streak going with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. at Durham. For the Tides, RHP Cody Sedlock (1-1, 2.63) will face Durham starter RHP Tommy Romero (3-2, 4.97).
