Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- It is said that if you attend enough baseball games you always will see something new. On Tuesday night at McCormick Field, a large amount of Asheville Tourists fans witnessed a first; an inside-the-park Home Run. Not only was it a rare sight to see, it ended up as the game-winning run for Asheville. They defeated the Rome Braves 3-2.

Omar Carrizales stepped to the plate with two outs and no one aboard in the bottom of the seventh of a 2-2 game. Rome's starter, Yean Carlos Gil, delivered a pitch that Carrizales lifted into deep right field. The ball traveled off the right field wall with outfielder Braxton Davidson giving chase. The Braves right-fielder crashed into the wall attempting to make the catch. He was unable to pick himself up off the warning track.

With Davidson not moving, Carrizales went racing around the bases to score the eventual winning run. Davidson ended up coming to his feet after the play and remained in the game.

Asheville's starter Helmis Rodriguez labored through five innings but only allowed two first inning runs. The bullpen of Shane Halley, Jerry Vasto, and Josh Michalec kept the scoreless innings coming as they combined to toss the final four frames.

The Tourists first run came in the fourth when Robbie Perkins singled in Dom Nunez with two outs. In the sixth, Asheville managed to tie the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luis Jean. Again it was Nunez who raced home. Perkins threw out all four of Rome's attempts at a stolen base with one of them coming on a pick off by Vasto.

Following Wednesday's off day, the Tourists will being a seven game road swing in Savannah. Thursday's game against the Sand Gnats begins at 7:05pm.
