Inferno's Hurme Named Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender Of The Week

PRINCETON, N.J. - Jani Hurme of the Columbia Inferno is the Rbk Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Jan. 30-Feb. 5.

The 6-foot and 195-pound netminder was 2-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .957 save percentage, stopping 68 of 71 shots.

The 31-year-old stopped 35 of 36 shots in a 3-1 win against Greenville on Feb. 3 and had 33 saves in a 6-2 win at Charlotte on Feb. 4, giving the Inferno its first back-to-back wins since Nov. 29 and Dec. 2.

Selected in the third round (58th overall) by the Ottawa Senators in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and under contract to the Atlanta Thrashers, Hurme was assigned to the Inferno on Jan. 27. He won his first start, 3-1 against Charlotte on Jan. 27, helping Columbia snap its team record 15-game winless streak (0-13-2).

Hurme is 4-2-0 with a goals-against average of 3.17 and a save percentage of .918 in six games with the Inferno and 2-4-0 with a goals-against average of 3.67 in six games with Chicago of the American Hockey League.

He played three full seasons in the NHL with Ottawa from 1999-2002 and with Florida in 2002-03 going 29-25-11 with a goals-against average of 2.47 and a save percentage of .903 in 76 games.

He also played in the International Hockey League from 1997-2000 with Detroit, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Grand Rapids, going 63-40-12 with a goals-against average of 3.08 and a save percentage of .895 in 125 games.

The Turku, Finland native also played three seasons in the Finnish Elite League from 1993-97.
