Columbia Inferno News Release
Columbia, SC, November 5, 2003âThe Columbia Inferno is proud to announce their celebration of the Palmetto Health Children's Hospital's 20th Birthday at our Friday, November 7th game against the Greenville Grrrowl. There will be birthday cake, children's face painting and other activities for children who attend. Mascots Richie Raccoon and Blaze will be in attendance for the bash.
Just 20 years ago, any available physician handled a Midlands child's emergency room visit, often using adult-sized equipment. In 1983, medical lab slips were hand-written and there were no computers or fax machines for communication between physicians, nurses, radiologists and medical staff. Babies born at 25 weeks' gestation had almost no chance of survival.
Today, Palmetto Health Children's Hospital, South Carolina's first children's hospital, treats more than 82,000 children each year and has more than 30 pediatric subspecialties devoted strictly to children. Located on the Palmetto Health Richland campus, Children's Hospital has the Midlands' only pediatric emergency department, with physicians who specialize in treating children.
Thanks to the vision and dedication of 35 physicians, 40 board members, a nine-member Administrative Medical Committee and a network of community leaders, children's health care needs are treated in an environment created especially for them.
Join Children's Hospital for the Festival of Trees, Nov. 21-23 as the South Carolina State Museum gets dressed up for the holidays with more than 200 decorated trees and wreaths. A black-tie gala is held Friday evening. Saturday and Sunday, admission to both the festival and the museum are free and filled with family activities and entertainment. Silent auction proceeds benefit Palmetto Health Children's Hospital. For more information or to purchase gala tickets, call (803) 434-2827.
