Inferno Playoff Tune-Up Continues with 5-2 Win over Grrrowl

COLUMBIA, SC – The Greenville Grrrowl ended their nine game regular season series against the rival Columbia Inferno with a 5-2 loss in front of 4,260 at the Carolina Coliseum Friday night. The Inferno won 8 of the 9 games against Greenville this season.

The Inferno opened the scoring on the powerplay when Tim Smith made a great move inside the Greenville blueline and fed Sean Owens who beat DAMIAN RHODES giving Columbia a 1-0 lead at 4:53 of the first period. The Inferno added four second period goals on 18 shots, and enjoyed a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes. Corey Hessler made it 2-0 at 1:45 of the second period, and Barrie Moore added a powerplay goal at 3:55 to give Columbia a 3-0 edge. A pair of goals from Shawn Wansborough at 7:10 and 18:03 gave the Inferno a 5-0 lead after two periods.

RHODES was replaced in goal by MICHAEL GARNETT after stopping 21 of 26 shots through two periods. JOHN NAIL broke the shutout bid of Inferno goaltender Josh Blackburn with a goal that made it 5-1 at 11:51 of the third period. And TYLER DEIS added his team-leading 21st goal of the season in Greenville's 5-2 loss. GARNETT stopped all 5 shots he faced in the third period, and is expected to get the start in goal Saturday afternoon against Roanoke.
