Gulls Beat Fresno In Shootout

March 7, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls moved into second place by themselves, tying the game in the third period and winning on a Marc Busenburg goal in the seventh round of the shootout.

With their win and Bakersfield's loss to Idaho, the Gulls (37-18-3) moved ahead of the Condors in the standings. With the shootout loss, Fresno drops to 30-22-7 on the season.

San Diego came out firing in the first period, but Fresno goalie Terry Friesen was up to the task stopping the Gulls first 18 first-period shots. On their 19th shot of the first period, however, Friesen proved he was human. Sylvain Deschatelets took a pass from Clayton Read to finally put the Blue and Orange on the board. Dean Tiltgen also picked up an assist on the play, his 31st of the year. The goal was Deschatelets' 18th of the season and came at 18:12 of a first period in which the Gulls out-shot the Falcons 19-4.

In the second period, Fresno's Ryan Kiley flipped a shot past Koenig on a two on one breakaway to tie the score at one at 14:13. The goal was Kiley's first of the season in only his second game of the year. Andrew Gardner and Alex Todd tallied assists on the play for the Falcons.

The Gulls kept the pressure on the Fresno defense, outshooting the Falcons 28-11 after two periods. But Friesen came up big for the Falcons, turning away 27 shots in the first two frames.

At the start of the third period Cory Murphy found the back of the net with a blast from the right point to give Fresno the lead, 2-1. Murphy's goal came 2:17 into the final frame and was assisted by Kiley and Todd.

But the Gulls continued the relentless offensive attack and the Falcon lead didn't last long. Dennis Purdie redirected a Dan Cousineau shot past the sprawling Friesen with 10:36 remaining in the game to knot the score at two. Purdie's goal, the last of regulation, was his fifth of the season while Cousineau and Jamie Black notched their 10th and 11th assists this year respectively.

In the shootout, both teams had notched one goal after six rounds. In the seventh, Koenig stopped a Colin Embley try before Marc Busenburg sent the San Diego crowd of 5,963 home, beating Friesen for the goal.
