Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Richard Bachman became only the second goalie to shut Alaska out all season, stopping all 25 shots he faced, while Mark Derlago scored his 40th goal of the year and assisted on the game-winner to lift Idaho to a 2-0 verdict before 3,860 Tuesday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces suffered their first whitewash since November 8 in Ontario while dropping their first game in regulation on home ice since January 9, snapping an unbeaten run of 13 games (10-0-3). Alaska also has lost six straight games to the Steelheads and is just 2-8-1 against the Brabham Cup champions, who eclipsed the 100-point mark with Tuesday's win, this season. The Aces (33-28-8) still can assure themselves of a playoff spot with a victory in the rematch tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m., broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM.

After a scoreless first period in which Idaho (48-16-5) out-shot the hosts, 12-7, the Steelies took the lead when Derlago set up Evan Barlow for a one-timer off the rush that squeezed past the blocker of Alaska goaltender Billy Sauer 34 seconds into the middle frame. Sauer gave up just that one goal on 30 shots, and now owns a 1.01 GAA along with a .970 save percentage in his two starts for the Glacier Blue, but watched as his team never solved Bachman. A late third period power play that failed was followed by a bench minor against the Aces with 1:23 remaining, setting the stage for Derlago to seal the outcome with a power play empty-netter at 19:17.

Alaska holds down fourth place in the National Conference with three games to play, one point behind Pacific Division co-leaders Bakersfield and Stockton, one point ahead of Utah, two points in front of Victoria and Las Vegas, and four ahead of Ontario. After tomorrow night's clash with Idaho, the Aces play host to Stockton in their final two games Friday and Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
