Idaho Adds 5-On-3 Power-Play Goal Late to Edge Utah

Utah Grizzlies News Release

Boise, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads scored a five-on-three power-play goal 10:31 into the third period to beat Utah in a game the Grizzlies leave feeling they deserved a better fate.

After giving up a power-play goal 7:24 into the first period, Utah emerged through the first period trailing 1-0 as some big saves from goaltender Ben Meisner kept the contest within reach going to the second period.

In the second, Utah outshot Idaho 11-4 and the persistence tied the game at one. 90 seconds into a shift following a draw in the Idaho end and a Steelheads timeout, Mathieu Aubin buried a shot from the left circle that was assisted by Martin Lee and Michael Pelech with 5:39 left in the second. Utah killed a penalty late and one that carried into the third to keep the contest 1-1.

Things for Utah started to deteriorate in the third period as they watched the officiating in amazement. In a four-on-four situation, the Grizzlies were whistled for too many men on the ice as a Grizzlies defenseman, who had just taken an elbow to the face, struggled to get off the ice in front of the Utah bench as the Grizzlies played the puck in the Idaho zone. Before the Steelheads could start their four-on-three power-play, Grizzlies Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham was given a bench minor penalty; following a sarcastic round of applause as a result of a pending ensuing draw that would ultimately put Idaho on a five-on-three power-play. The Grizzlies were one second away from killing the two-man disadvantage when the Steelheads scored the game-winning goal at 10:31 of the third period.

Utah had a power-play late and some good chances at six-on-five with an extra attacker, but were unable to tie.

Grizzlies goaltender Ben Meisner, stopped all but two power-play shots and 19 of 21 in the game.

The Grizzlies return to action Friday in Stockton. Face-off is at 8:30 p.m.
