Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Philippe Cornet scored his second shootout goal of the season as the Cincinnati Cyclones (9-3-0-0) secured first place in the North Division standings and defeated the Evansville IceMen (7-1-0-3) by a 2-1 final score in front of 4,783 at U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday afternoon.

The crowd, which was mostly comprised of local students and educators for Education in Hockey Day, was treated to a defensive clinic by the home team, as the Cyclones successfully killed three penalties. Netminder Rob Madore (W, 34 saves, 7-2-0-0) taught the visitors a lesson in goaltending, as he turned aside 34 of 35 shots faced and stopped all five attempts in the shootout.

The Cyclones wasted no time finding the back of the net, shooting out to an early 1-0 lead when John McFarland blasted a rebound past goaltender Garrett Bartus (L, 30 saves, 0-0-0-1) at 0:49 of the first period. Due in part to a fight between captain David MacDonald and defenseman Thomas Larkin, the Cyclones maintained the lead and momentum on the ice, outshooting the IceMen 11-9 as they entered the first intermission.

Shortly after the Cyclones successfully killed a penalty to start the second frame, the IceMen evened the score at 3:19 when defenseman Matt Krug buried a shot by Patrick Kennedy that slowly trickled its way along the goal line. Later in the stanza, the Cyclones killed another penalty, holding the score at 1-1 as the third period began.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third period, with each squad recording 12 shots on goal as the game headed into overtime. After another scoreless bonus session, Cincinnati fans were treated to their second consecutive home shootout. Similar to Friday's shootout victory, Philippe Cornet scored the only goal of the shootout on the same move he used against Greenville.

"I just kind of went with the same thing I did at the last game at home," said Cornet. "I get some speed when I take off the puck and slow down - try to get that glove down and put it top-shelf, glove-side. It's working so far, so hopefully I won't jinx it."

Madore stopped all five shots in the shootout, giving the Cyclones a perfect 5-0 record in games that go beyond regulation.

"Overall, the team played a really good game," said Madore. "I feel like I could have been a little better at puckhandling. I don't think that first goal really should have gone in. The guys played a great game and they deserved a shutout, but certainly a win is a win."

"We ended up getting the two points, so that's all that matters," said Head Coach Ben Simon. "They play a very defensive style of game and we knew that and had to be patient. They don't give up a lot, so with that being said, we stuck with our program and, at the end of the day, got the win."

The same two teams will reunite on Friday night in Evansville, with an 8:15pm ET opening face-off. Fans can hear the game on the Cyclones Radio Network (CyclonesHockey.com, America One, Cyclones Mobile App) beginning at 7:45pm ET.

The Cyclones will return to the ice at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday, November 23 when they welcome in the Reading Royals for the first time since the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals! The first 1,500 fans ages 2-12 will receive a Kids Jersey T-Shirt of Cyclones defenseman Chris Reed. Tickets are on sale now! Call 513.421.PUCK or visit CyclonesHockey.com to secure your seats.
