EVANSVILLE, IN - A four-goal third period led the Evansville IceMen to a 6-2 win and weekend sweep over the Indy Fuel Saturday at the Ford Center. With the win, the IceMen are within six points of Quad City for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference with 13 games remaining.
The Fuel scored the game's first goal 7:35 into the game, when Michael Colantone tipped a Ben Marshall shot past IceMen goaltender Scott Greenham. Indy controlled the play in the first period and outshot Evansville 11-5.
Evansville tied the game 1-1 early in the second period, when Mike Duco tipped in a shot from Troy Rutkowski past Indy goalie Mac Carruth. The IceMen then took the lead with 5:34 left in the frame as Jordan Sims tipped a Curtis Leonard wrist shot into the net. The Fuel evened the score before the second intermission, when Colantone deflected a Nick Petrecki attempt behind Greenham with 2:46 left.
Andrew Harrison scored the eventual game-winner 2:51 into the final period, when he slid a backhander between the legs of Carruth to make it 3-2, and Vincent Dunn gave the IceMen an insurance goal on a 2-on-1 rush ten minutes later. Duco added an empty net goal, and Matthew Zay buried a sixth goal in the final minute to complete the four-goal third period.
Greenham stopped 28 saves in his eight win of the season, while Carruth made 21 saves in the loss.
The IceMen wrap up their four-game week Sunday against the Quad City Mallards at 5:15pm at the Ford Center. It will be the final matchup of the season between the two teams in Evansville, but the two teams will meet one last time March 25 in Moline, IL.
