Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- Despite receiving plenty of energy from 5,576 enthusiastic fans, the Kalamazoo Wings third period comeback bid fell short, as the K-Wings dropped their home opener and 10th Annual Orange Ice Game 2-1 against the Evansville IceMen. The crowd of 5,576 was the largest opening night crowd in the K-Wings' 40-year history.
A defensive first period didn't lead to many shots on goal. The two teams combined for seven shots in the first period, with Evansville posting a period-high of five.
Evansville broke the gridlock early in the second period with a goal from Matt Schepke (1st). Skating near the right circle, Schepke's slap shot deflected off the pipe and across the goal line past goaltender Jordan Binnington.
Despite being held scoreless, Kalamazoo had plenty of opportunity to score in the second period. Kalamazoo had three power-plays in the period highlighted by a two-man advantage for 1:24 midway through the period.
Kalamazoo scored their first goal of the season when Yanni Gourde sent a perfect pass to Chris Lawrence (1st), who just came out of the penalty box, to score on a breakaway. The goal ended a 104:44 minute goalless drought for Kalamazoo.
Mike Siedel continued to find the back of the net scoring his second goal of the season in the third period. Finding the puck off a deflection, Siedel ripped the eventual game-winner from between the circles with 4:47 remaining in regulation.
The K-Wings will start the month of November at Wings Stadium on Friday, November 1st with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Toledo Walleye on Duck Dynasty Night featuring a special appearance from the hit TV's very own Mountain Man.
