IceGators shoot down Wildcatters 6-5

Beaumont, TX - For the first time in 23 games between the Louisiana IceGators and Texas Wildcatters, a game went to a shoot out, where the Gators tallied goals from Wes Mason and Chris Thompson to escape with a 6-5 win.

The Wildcatters picked up right where they left off Friday night, jumping out to a 3-1 lead after the first period. Andrew Ianiero (14) opened the scoring with a slap shot from the slot past Nathan Marsters to open the scoring at 5:57. The only bright spot for the Gators came at 8:54, when Paul Lynch scored his first professional goal to tie the game at one. The big defenseman from Peabody, MA, blasted a 40 foot slap shot past Davis Parley to tie the game at 1-1, assists going to Jade Galbraith and Joe Dustin. Texas special teams would get the next two markers,Kamil Kreps (5) on the power play at 12:45 followed by a shorthanded goal by Ianiero (15) at 13:56, to open a two goal cushion for the home team.

The Gators stormed back in the 2nd period to tie the game at 3-3. Dave McCulloch turned momentum with a shorthanded goal at 7:19 to bring Louisiana within one. Roger Leonard stole the puck behind the Texas net, with two men on him, Leonard centered to McCulloch who snapped the biscuit top shelf for his first lamp lighter as a Gator and 3rd of the year. Louisiana tied the game at 12:17 on another goal by a defenseman. Just as a power play came to and end, Josh Barker (2) lifted a wrist shot through a screen past Parley for the tie. McCulloch and Leonard getting the assist on the goal from the slot as Shawn Skiehar planted a perfect screen in front of the net.

The period was a see-saw affair with each team scoring twice. Pascal Pelletier went five hole for his 8th goal of the season just 1:25 into the period. Galbraith with the perfect pass into the slot, set up the goal. At 3:45, the Gators caught a break when Chris Thompson's centering pass banked off the skate of Parley into the net. Thompson's 13th goal of the season gave Louisiana a 5-3 lead. That lead would not hold as Jason Kostadine (4) beat Marsters from 5 feet out, at 4:11, to cut the lead to one. At 10:13, on the power play, Kevin Cooper (13) redirected an Aaron MacInnis wrist shot to tie the game at 5-5. Neither team could score in the remaining 9:47 or in overtime. In the shootout, Rob Globke scored in the 2nd round for Texas. The Gators went to their veterans and they responded. In round 4, Wes Mason's wrist shot went off the far post and in, while in round 5 Chris Thompson pulled out a tremendous fake to the backhand and the game winning goal. Nathan Marsters sealed his second win of the season in a shoot out, when he denied Mark Gianneti with the last chance for Texas. With the win, Louisiana's record is now 18-27-3, 40 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators outshot Texas 41-40. Power plays were 0-5 for the Gators and 2-4 for the Wildcatters. The Gators next game is Wednesday night, when the Gators host the Columbia Inferno at 7:05pm. It's "Cheap Date Night" when fans can buy one ticket and get another one free.
