San Diego Gulls News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â San Diego Gulls goaltender Eddy Ferhi was outstanding... The only problem was Fresno Falcons netminder Brett Jaeger was perfect, leading his troops to a 1-0 victory Friday night at Save Mart Center.
Ferhi, who finished with 30 saves, was the main reason the Gulls were in the game early on, as Fresno dominated the scoring chances. Jaeger, who made 31 saves, was the main reason the Falcons won, as he single handedly kept it a 1-0 game through the latter part of the second period and majority part of the third.
San Diego (25-18-6) is now winless in its last three games, but more importantly fall six points behind Fresno (28-17-6) for fourth place in the West Division. Keep in mind that only the top for teams in the division qualify for the playoffs. The Gulls, however, still have two games in hand on the Falcons.
Teams skated to a scoreless first period, even though the Falcons controlled the play. They only out-shot the Gulls by a 10-6 margin, but the majority of the opening frame was spent in the San Diego zone. And when Fresno did find the net, Ferhi was there to turn the chance away.
The theme, however, continued early in the second and it was only a matter of time before the Falcons lit the lamp. And indeed they did, at the 3:31 mark on a power play. Dan Tessier rushed down the right wing side and found a wide-open John Wroblewski, who cut to the left circle before roofing a wrist shot over Ferhi's shoulder. It was Wroblewski's eighth goal of the season.
San Diego got its first quality offensive chances late in the second period, but netminder Jaeger retained Fresno's 1-0 lead. Jaeger, entered the game having stopped 90 of his last 92 shots. He's now stopped 121 of his last 123 shots, a four-game span.
The Gulls continued to pour it on in the third period, registering more and more quality opportunities. Jaeger, however, remained unbeatable and finished off his second straight shutout. He and back-up goaltender Kelly Shields combined for a 4-0 victory Wednesday in Victoria. Jaeger didn't finish that game because he was ejected due to a bench-clearing brawl.
Notes: San Diego is now 9-13-3 on the road, having been outscored 77-55... The Gulls are 21-12-4 against West Division teams... San Diego and Fresno have combined for 48 goals in seven games this season (SDG: 25, FRE: 23). Of those 48 goals, 22 have come on the power play... Scott Borders was activated from the injured list after missing the last six games with a quad-contusion... Mike Garrow (concussion), Evgueni Nourislamov (broken thumb) and Wes Rypien (knee sprain) all remain on injured reserve... Andrew Canzanello remains with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks...
The Gulls return home Saturday against the Bakersfield Condors, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. It will be "Trucker Night," presented by Hawthorne Machinery, and the first 6,000 fans in attendance will receive a Gulls Trucker Hat. San Diego will then hit the road for three games, featuring a two-game set against the Victoria Salmon Kings Tuesday and Wednesday and another match against Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 26.
