Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch tied the game in the third period to force overtime, but the St. John's IceCaps were able to slip past and take a 3-2 victory tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Byron Froese and Tye McGinn both lit the lamp for the Crunch as the team moved to 30-20-6-5 on the season. Syracuse finished the eight-game season series against St. John's at 4-1-2-1.
Mike McKenna made 28 saves in net for the Crunch, while Yann Danis earned the win turning aside 31-of-33 shots. Syracuse went 1-for-5 on the power play and a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Crunch were first to strike in the first period, but the IceCaps evened the score before the intermission. At the 12:49 mark, Joel Vermin carried the puck across the blue line and sent it down to Henri Ikonen. After a fake to force Danis to the right, Ikonen slid it cross-crease to a wide open Froese. With 3:29 remaining in the frame, Chris Terry knotted the game during a 3-on-1 rush with a one-timer off a feed from Charles Hudon.
St. John's went on top with a shorthanded goal with 5:31 remaining in the second period. Jacob de la Rose got out ahead of the defense, switched over to the backhand and shoveled one in. The assist went to Josiah Didier.
Syracuse quickly knotted the score for a second time just 2:30 into the final stanza with a power-play marker. Matt Taormina fired from the left point for McGinn to tip in while parked in front of Danis. Vermin made it a two-point night with the secondary helper.
The teams remained tied through regulation and went to overtime. At the 1:40 mark, Hudon beat McKenna on the breakaway to give the IceCaps the win.
The Crunch are back in action when they travel to face the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
