Comets Win Streak Snapped with Loss to Phantoms

Allentown, PA - The Utica Comets lost by a score of 4-1 to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday night at the PPL Center.

Colin McDonald scored just 41 seconds into the game with a one-timer past Michael Garteig. His 22nd of the season was assisted from Scott Laughton and Cole Bardreau. With a four-minute power play, the Phantoms extended their lead in the second half of the man advantage at 9:34 of the first period. T.J. Brennan fired a wrist shot past Garteig for his 18th of the year. His 10th power play goal of the year was assisted by Andy Miele and Greg Carey.

The Phantoms continued the attack in the second period with a goal at 12:16. Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored on a one-timer for his eighth of the year from Miele and Brennan. Through 40 minutes of hockey, the Phantoms carried a three-goal lead but the Comets led in shots on goal by a margin of 30-13.

Cody Kunyk scored the first, and only, Comets goal of the night with his 12th of the season at 13:16 of the third period. Jake Virtanen and Curtis Valk assisted on the goal. Garteig was pulled for the extra attacker which Travis Sanheim took advantage of to score his 10th of the year. The unassisted goal ended the scoring of the night to give the Phantoms the 4-1 win.

Garteig made 22 saves on 25 shots and fell to a record of 0-2-2 on the season. Alex Lyon made 36 saves to collect his 24th win of the year.

The Comets killed four of five penalties and were held scoreless on three power play chances.
