Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release
PENSACOLA, FL - It's amazing what 24 hours will do for a hockey club.
After suffering a disappointing loss on Friday night to Columbia, the Pensacola Ice Pilots played almost a complete game in beating the Charlotte Checkers 3-1 at The Hangar. It was the sixth win in the last nine games for the Ice Pilots at home and their 14th win overall.
The Ice Pilots looked like the better team all game long, playing well defensively and capitalizing on their scoring chances. Goaltender Michael Mole was outstanding stopping 33 of 34 shots and was selected as the game's first star.
The Ice Pilots didn't spoil the return of Travis Lisabeth who had an assist and five shots on goal. Lisabeth had been sidelined with a broken hand and provided the Ice Pilots with a spark to their line-up.
In the opening period the Blue and Gold struck first when Mike Wirll finished off a mad scramble in front of the net by putting the puck behind Christ Holt and making it 1-0. Travis Lisabeth and Sergei Ogorodnikov earned helpers.
Just over four minutes later, the Ice Pilots added to their lead when David Wrigley was left alone at the side of the net. He tapped home a shot to make it 2-0. Greg Watson and Jason Goulet picked up the assists. Goulet started the play by keeping the puck in at the blue line and then firing the puck on the goaltender.
In the second period, the Checkers cut the deficit to one when they tallied a power play goal. However, the Ice Pilots made up for that when Nikko Tuomi finished off a two-on-one by scoring and it was 3-1.
In the third period the Ice Pilots defense took over and limited the Checkers scoring chances. Mole was solid in net in the final 20 minutes turning aside all 14 shots.
The Checkers were 1 for 5 on the power play, while the Ice Pilots were 0 for 9.
