Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Brad Schell tied the Gladiators all-time team record for most point in a season, posting his 88th point of the year and helping Gwinnett to a 6-2 win over the Alaska Aces on Saturday night in front of 10,853 on the Your Best Rate Financial Home Ice at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Chad Painchaud and Colton Fretter also collected two goals in the Gwinnett win helping Gwinnett improve to 27-13-5 on the year.
Chad Painchaud posted his 15th goal of the season to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead on the Aces 5:35 into the first period. Parked in the slot all by himself, Painchaud took a pass from Scott Lehman out of the corner and ripped a shot past Alaska netminder Derek Gustafson for the goal. Brad Schell also collected an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.
Alaska tied the game at one seconds after a power play expired, as Corbin Schmidt ripped a snap shot past Gladiators netminder Dave Caruso at the 4:58 mark of the second period. Peter Metcalf set up a wide-open Schmidt in the right wing face off circle to collect an assist on the goal. Kimbi Daniels also collected an assist on the marker for Alaska.
Gwinnett regained the lead on Jamie Milam's 10th power play goal of the year. Schell found Milam open at the left wing point, where the defenseman ripped a slap shot past Gustafson for the maker for Gwinnett. Scott Mifsud also had an assist on the power play goal for the Gladiators at the 8:49 mark of the second period.
Kevin Croxton answered for the Aces at the 12:16 mark of the third period on the power play. Croxton was able to beat Caruso from close range for the goal. Schmidt had a helper on the maker for the Aces to tie the game at two.
Gwinnett blew the contest open in the third period with four goals en route to the 6-2 win. Painchaud collected his second goal of the game just 36 seconds into the third period to give Gwinnett a 3-2 lead. His goal proved to be the game winner for Gwinnett. Brian Lee had an assist on the goal for Gwinnett as he worked the puck to the front of the net to Painchaud to set up the goal.
Colton Fretter pushed the Gladiators lead to 4-2 with an unassisted goal at the 9:41 mark of the third period. Digging the puck free from behind the net, Fretter walked into the slot and ripped the puck past Gustafson for the goal.
Fretter's second goal of the contest and his 29th of the season at the 15:35 mark gave the Gladiators a 5-2 lead. Parked in the slot on the power play, Fretter beat Gustafson over the shoulder as he tucked the puck under the crossbar on the power play for the goal. Schell and Mifsud hooked up for the assists on the goal.
Mifsud rounded out the scoring for the Gladiators as he clanked the puck off skates in front of the net and past Gustafson for the goal with just 2:20 left in the third period. Schell collected his fourth assist of the contest on the goal, tying him with Jason Elders for most points in one season by one player in franchise history with 88 points. Jamie Milam also had a helper on the power play goal for Gwinnett.
Dave Caruso finished with 34 saves for Gwinnett in the win. The Gladiators finished the game 3-for-12 on the power play as Alaska converted on 1-of-5 power play chances in the contest.
