Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, started their five-game series versus Idaho in front of 4,197 fans at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, and snatched an early lead against the savvy Steelheads. Veteran Defenseman Steve Lingren earned the game-winner in Victoria's 3-1 victory.
Wes Goldie nabbed his sixth shorthanded goal of the season as the Salmon Kings took a 1-0 lead. At 3:07 into the frame, Goldie stole the puck from the Steelheads defenseman at the left point, carried the puck into the Idaho zone, and fired a wristshot past Netminder Steve Silverthorn. Victoria Goaltender Bryan Bridges saved all 12 shots in the first.
Lingren scored his fifth goal of the season 57 seconds into the second period for the Salmon Kings two-goal lead. Jordan Krestanovich led Goldie up the ice and from the left circle, Goldie spotted Lingren streaking to the slot, and he went glove side for his seventh point versus the Steelheads this season.
The Victoria powerplay padded the lead with 2:22 remaining in the second. Jordan Krestanovich and Lingren moved the puck from the corner and fed Ryan Wade at the point. Wade's slapshot sliced through the screen and trickled under Silverthorn for a Salmon Kings 3-0 advantage.
Idaho found paydirt with 7:28 left in the third period to close the gap. Traffic in front of the Victoria net provided a screen for Colin Shields, who posted his tenth goal of the season.
Bridges made 32 saves to earn his fourth consecutive win in as many starts, and the Salmon Kings continued their undefeated streak to five games. Silverthorn suffered his 11th loss of the season.
Final: 3-1 Salmon Kings
Victoria went 1 for 5 on the powerplay and Idaho was held scoreless in eight opportunities with the man advantage, including four minutes of powerplay resulting from two consecutive minor penalties. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 33-27. The Salmon Kings (19-26-0-1) and Steelheads (22-17-2-1) will clash tomorrow in game two of the series in Victoria, before squaring off in Idaho next week for a three-game bout. Puck drops at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre at 7:05 p.m.
