Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Idaho snapped the Long Beach Ice Dogs' five-game unbeaten streak and handed the Ice Dogs their first home loss of the season with a 5-2 decision at Long Beach Arena in a West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) game. Despite the Steelheads ahead in total points in the league, Long Beach had a better winning percentage heading into Wednesday night's contest. The game was the first of a three-game series, which resumes this Friday and Saturday.

Joe Rybar opened up the scoring for Idaho (9-4-1) when he flicked the puck over the shoulder of Ice Dogs goaltender Mike Buzak (4-1-0) 4:38 into the first period. Long Beach (5-3-0) had two players in the penalty box when Marty Flichel blasted a shot for the Steelheads second goal of the opening period, this one at the 11:33 mark.

Jeremy Mylymok widened the Idaho lead to 3-0 when he scored 11:26 into the second period. Yevgeniy Kabanets scored his second goal of the season when he stole the puck from the Steelheads and beat Idaho netminder Blair Allison (5-1-1) 13 minutes into the second to shrink the Idaho lead to 3-1. The Steelheads capitalized on another two-man advantage when Chris Marinucci was set up by Rybar and Flichel at 16:14 in the second. Idaho scored its fourth power-play goal of the night when Adam Copeland tipped in a shot to beat Buzak and give Idaho a commanding 5-1 lead. B.J. Boxma replaced Buzak immediately following.

Long Beach scored its league-leading 17th third-period goal on Tomas Hradecky's goal 18:16 into the last frame, assisted by Robb Wismer and Kabanets. A rookie from the Ukraine, Kabanets now has five points in the last two games.
