November 14, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release
The Baton Rouge Kingfish announced that they will be competing against the Mississippi Sea Wolves for the 2002-03 Coca-Cola Cup. Sponsored this season by Coca- Cola Bottlers in Baton Rouge and Gulf Port, the Cup will be awarded to the team who has scored the most points in head to head competition during regular season.
"We wanted to create additional interest and enthusiasm behind Kingfish hockey," said Jim Martin, Coca-Cola's vice-president of marketing. "We are proud to be a promotional partner with the Kingfish, and we are hopeful that Baton Rouge area fans will take special interest in this new rivalry between the Kingfish and the SeaWolves."
The points will be distributed as follows: 2 points for a victory, 1 point for an overtime or shootout loss. In the event of a tie in standings, the teams will use the current league tie breaking system to determine a winner.
"[The Cup] renews an intense rivalry between us and the Sea Wolves," said Barrett Ortego, assistant general manager of the Kingfish. " I think it will help build something that the fans will enjoy and get involved with."
"It's tremendous that Coca-Cola has stepped up and placed the Cup on the line between the Sea Wolves and Kingfish," said Bo McMurphy, President of the Sea Wolves. "The games with Baton Rouge will take on an added dimension in the rivalry. It's exciting for the teams and fans with the Coca-Cola Cup on the line."
The Cup will travel to every game of the challenge and will be on display at the Baton Rouge Centroplex December 14. The 2002-03 Coca-Cola Cup has already visited the Fish Tank and the Mississippi Coliseum this season, as the Kingfish fell 5-4 on October 25 and dropped a 4-1 decision in Biloxi on October 27. The competition, which will finalize Mar 25 in Biloxi, began Oct 12 with a 3-2 Kingfish loss to the Sea Wolves. There will be 9 more games this season between the Kingfish and the Sea Wolves.
Sunday is âTiger Nite' at the âFish Tank' as the Kingfish take on the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 4:05 p.m. The Kingfish will wear special "Tiger" jerseys that will be auctioned off following the game.
