I-Cubs Swing Their Way to Victory

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (8-3) scored 14 runs on 15 hits to beat the Omaha Storm Chasers (6-6) by a score of 14-1, Thursday at Principal Park.

After suffering their third loss of the season yesterday afternoon, Iowa came out swinging early, getting out to an 11-0 lead in the first three innings. They opened the scoring with two runs in the first on a home run from Mike Tauchman.

Iowa added six runs in the second inning highlighted by doubles from Dom Nuñez, David Bote and Darius Hill. They scored three more on another double from Nuñez and a two-run blast from Christopher Morel.

Nick Loftin got Omaha on the board in the fourth with his second home run in as many days, a solo shot to make the score 11-1. That was all they would score against Nick Neidert, who spun five innings of one-run ball.

The game stayed at 11-1 until the bottom of the seventh, when Morel drove in a run with his sixth double of the season. Two ground outs in the eighth grew Iowa's lead to 14-1, where it would stay, earning Iowa their division-leading eighth victory of the season.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Six of Iowa's nine starters had two or more hits tonight, with eight of the nine recording at least one hit. Sergio Alcántara led the team with three hits, growing his average on the year to .353.

Iowa's pitching staff allowed just one run on six hits, walking just one batter while striking out four.

Christopher Morel went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, home run, three runs batted in and a walk out of the leadoff spot. He is now hitting .375 and recorded his sixth double and third home run.
