Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, VA - Connor Hurley's goal with 3:40 remaining in regulation lifted the Norfolk Admirals (4-2-0, 8 pts) to a 5-3 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays Saturday night at Scope.

The Admirals struck first on their first power play of the game. TJ Melancon called for the puck in the slot, and curled a shot over the blocker of Stingrays goaltender Parker Milner.

South Carolina countered six minutes later when Matt Pohlkamp hammered a one-timed shot behind Norfolk netminder Ty Reichenbach to even the game at 1-1.

Norfolk reclaimed the lead on a tally by the red-hot Chris Crane. Chase Harrison flipped the puck toward the net that hit off the pad of Milner. The rebound bounced to Ben Duffy who tapped a soft shot that was also stopped by Milner. However, the third chance was too much for Milner to overcome, as Crane batted the puck into the net at the top of the crease for the goal.

South Carolina seized control of the middle frame scoring twice in the first 3:39 of the period. The first goal was scored off the rebound from a Mike Chen shot by former Admirals Christian Horn that evened the game at two apiece. The second goal was scored when Andrew Cherniwchan skated to the faceoff dot at the right circle and launched a shot over the blocker of Reichenbach to put the Stingrays out in front 3-2.

Before the close of the second period, the Admirals tied the game on a great read and play by Domenic Alberga. Alberga anticipated a cross-ice pass in the neutral zone and jumped the puck for the turnover and took off on a breakaway opportunity. Alberga made a couple of shifty deke moves before wristing a shot past Milner on the blocker side. The goal put the score at 3-3 heading into the third.

Both teams exchanged chances in the third period, but both goaltenders had good puck control to keep the puck out. The Admirals grabbed the go-ahead marker with a wild scrum in front of the South Carolina net. Kevin Klima hit the puck toward the net and Milner made an initial save, but the puck bounced to Duffy who hurled his shot toward the pack of bodies in front. The puck landed in the crease, and Connor Hurley batted it in for the go-ahead goal that sent the Scope crowd into a frenzy.

In the closing moments of regulation, South Carolina received a power play and with the goaltender pulled, the Stingrays had a 6-on-4 advantage. However, Reichenbach and the Admirals penalty kill held off the Rays assault. The Admirals eventually grabbed ahold of the puck and fed it ahead to Crane who pushed the puck into the empty net as time expired to seal the exciting 5-3 victory.

Reichenbach earns the win stopping. 38 of 41 shots, while Milner takes the loss allowing four goals on 28 shots.
