Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that RHP Brett Hunter, the A's 7th round pick from the 2008 draft, has been transferred to Kane County from the A's Rookie League team in Arizona. Hunter's arrival brings Kane County to the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players on the roster as the Cougars open a four-game home series this evening vs. Peoria at Elfstrom Stadium.
A late-summer signee by Oakland, Hunter has pitched just one inning in his pro career, throwing a scoreless frame this past Tuesday for the Rookie A's. Hunter spent part of the summer pitching for the USA Collegiate National Team as the squad completed a perfect 24-0 record at the FISU World Championships. In four appearances (three starts), Hunter was 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA in 18.1 innings of work. Also in 2007, Hunter pitched for the USA National Team, competing in the Pan American Games with fellow '08 draftees and current Cougars teammates Petey Paramore and Tyson Ross.
Hunter played collegiately for three seasons at Pepperdine University and was one of three Pepperdine juniors selected during the second day of the June draft. The 214th overall pick, Hunter appeared in five games for the Waves in 2008 with a 1-0 record and a 3.38 ERA. In his three-year career, Hunter was 12-8 with a 3.46 ERA at Pepperdine and alternated as a starter and reliever.
Hunter becomes the seventh Cougar from the '08 draft to arrive at Kane County this season and the fourth pitcher to arrive in Geneva. Since the Cougars became an A's affiliate prior to 2003, no more than six same-year draftees had landed in Kane County within a season. The arrival of Hunter now gives the Cougars a total of seven players (six of which are on the current active roster) from the '08 class to make a stop at Kane County during their first professional season.
