Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL -The Peoria Chiefs lost their sixth straight contest with a 6-3 defeat at Kane County Friday night to begin the season's final series. The loss drops the Chiefs to a season-worst 58-77 with a 28-39 mark on the second half. Chiefs starter Josh Whitlock retired the first four Cougars he faced until Greg Dowling smoked a home run to right-center in the bottom of the second inning. The solo shot gives Dowling three homers against Peoria on the season and 14 overall. Whitlock recovered to strike out Jake Smith but then walked Justin Frash on five pitches. Petey Paramore followed with a long double to center as Frash scored easily for a 2-0 Cougars lead. The Chiefs cut the lead in half against Tyson Ross in the top of the fourth. With Ross having retired nine in a row, Jovan Rosa reached with a sharp single to left. Bautista just missed a game-tying homer with a double off the base of the centerfield wall to advance Rosa to third. The Cougars caught a break when Rebel Ridling's line drive bounced off Ross's leg and went directly to shortstop Michael Richard. Richard threw Ridling out at first as Rosa scored and Bautista was held at third. The Chiefs completed the comeback in the top of the fifth against Ross as Dylan Johnston led off with a towering home run into the right-field Leinie Lodge. The blast gives Johnston homers in back-to-back games for the second time in August and moves his season total to 14. Kane County regained the lead on one swing in the bottom of the sixth against Chiefs reliever Chris Siegfried. Larry Cobb led off the frame with a monster home run over the left-field party deck for a 3-2 Cougars lead. Cobb has hit 13 homers on the season with five of them coming against the Chiefs. The MWL Post-Season All-Star is now 7-for-7 with two homers, three doubles and four RBI against Siegfried this season. Peoria rallied to tie the game in the eighth without a base hit. Nate Samson drew a leadoff walk from reliever Brett Hunter and Rosa followed with a free pass of his own. With Luis Bautista showing bunt, Samson stole third. Bautista tied the game with a sac fly to deep center as Samson scored easily. After Larry Cobb robbed Ridling with a diving catch in center, Chad Kerfoot relieved Hunter. Brandon Guyer reached on an error to put the go-ahead run at second, but Johnston struck out swinging to end the frame. The Cougars took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Cobb collected yet another hit against Siegfried with a one-out single to center. Dowling put Kane County on top 4-3 with a double to right and then scored on a double to left by Jake Smith. Jake Muyco relieved Siegfried and got the second out before a double by Paramore scored Smith for a 6-3 Cougars lead. For the fifth time in this sixth game losing streak the Chiefs had the tying run either on base or at the plate in the ninth inning. With one down Elvis Lara walked and Josh Harrison doubled to right. Kerfoot struck out Samson and then got Rosa to ground out to third to end the game. Whitlock allowed two runs on three hits over four innings. He struck out two and walked one in his fourth Chiefs start of the season. Siegfried (5-7) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in 3 1.3 innings. The lefty has allowed 15 runs in 14 2/3 innings against Kane County this season and struck out five Friday night. Muyco allowed one hit in his 2/3 of an inning.
Player of the Game - Luis Bautista (C) - The Chiefs catcher singled, doubles and drove in a run in the Chiefs 6-3 loss. Bautista's 24th double of the season set the Chiefs up for their first run and then he singled in his next at-bat. His 49th RBI of the season tied the game at three in the eighth but the Chiefs couldn't take the lead.
