Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to pick up a 6-2 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Alex Liddi drove in the go ahead run with a single in the decisive inning.
Quad Cities (33-34 second half, 66-65 overall) grabbed the early advantage with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. Ross Oeder had singled with two outs to become the first River Bandit base runner. D'Marcus Ingram worked the count to 3-2 against Rattler starting pitcher Juan Ramirez. Ingram sent a hard, one-hop grounder through the legs of shortstop Terry Serrano into left-center. Oeder was running on the pitch and never stopped until he slid in under the throw to the plate.
Wisconsin (24-43, 55-78) answered in the top of the fifth. Serrano reached to start the inning on a drag bunt and was moved along to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Meneses. Israel Nunez singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Serrano with the tying run.
The Rattlers took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Joe Dunigan and Liddi singled to start the inning and put runners on the corners. A wild pitch by River Bandit starter Deryk Hooker allowed Dunigan to score.
The River Bandits tied the game on an odd play in their half of the sixth. Quad Cities had a runner at third with one out and Ingram at the plate. Wisconsin brought the infield in to cut down the run at the plate. The strategy should have worked. Ingram sent a broken bat grounder to Liddi. But, the Rattler third baseman had to duck out of the way of the barrel end of the bat that twirled toward him as he went to field the ball. That threw him off and Ingram reached on a game-tying infield single.
The game remained tied until the eighth inning. Colina reached on an error to start the frame against JD Stambaugh. Dunigan followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Then, Liddi singled knock in the go-ahead run. A hit batsman loaded the bases. Stambaugh got the first out, but the Bandits went to the bullpen and got Matt Frevert.
The right-hander walked Meneses to force in a run home. Nunez followed with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Daniel Carroll concluded the scoring for the Rattlers in the eighth.
Joe Kantakevich, who entered in the seventh inning, pitched a scoreless eighth. Jose Escalona closed out the River Bandits with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.
Game two of the series is Saturday night. Jose Jimenez (0-0, 0-0, 9.49) gets the ball for the Timber Rattlers. Chuckie Fick (5-5, 3.18) is set to start for the River Bandits. Game time is 6:00pm.
